About Virginia tides

Barrier islands, big bays, and river tides: Chesapeake and Delaware bays carry the tide deep inland, and a nor'easter can hold water in, or blow it out, for days at a time.

Virginia has 132 NOAA tide stations — 38 reference stations whose predictions come from harmonic analysis of observations there, and 94 subordinate stations calculated from them. The biggest tidal range in the state is at Oyster Harbor — 5.0 ft between mean higher high water and mean lower low water.
